I Love My Long Distance Best Friend

August 6, 2017

Long Distance is something that a lot of people can relate to, especially in a day and age such as today. But, no one can relate to the kind of friendship that my best friend and I have and take to heart. Rita Nora Freebairn and I have been friends for over six years, yet our friendship is the strongest it has ever been.

Rita is one of the coolest people I know. She was born in Fiji, has traveled to various places in the world, is insanely smart, and is really good at doing makeup. Not only that, we have a similar interest in video games. Although we live over a thousand of miles away from each other, we still find ways to keep our friendship going.

“There are plenty of ways we do things together. Computer-based applications like “Skype” really help with communication” she says. “Communication is one of key parts of our friendship, and we still do things that friends who live nearby each other do like text and call each other, but our friendship was able to grow to the point it is today with the help of video games.”

Over the years there have been plenty of advances to aid online communication and these advances are likely the cause for the increase in long distances relationships whether that was the intention or not. One of these outlets we found helpful for the cultivation of our friendship was video games due to the interests we share and the fun we are able to have together.

When asked about our friendship in particular, it’s so hard to describe it in one sentence. “Our friendship is irreplaceable,” she says, “I always have a good time talking to you, no matter what it is.”

Even though it may seem a bit unconventional I wouldn’t trade my friendship with Rita for anything because every time I log on and we start a conversation it is incredibly easy to lose track of time. Plus, when we actually get the chance to see each other, it’s like we're back where we left off online, and the memories are priceless.

It was our first-time meeting and we were both excited. Weeks before we would call each other every day and say how excited we were about actually meeting. When I saw her for the first time, my first instinct was to hug her because she was actually real, but that hug quickly turned into a tackle. She had a snack in her hand that unfortunately did not survive the tackle, but anecdotes such as that will keep us laughing for years.

In all, you don’t need to be next to someone to have a good time. Having a friend over the computer screen is totally normal in 2017, and although some people don’t understand how our friendship works, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
